Passyunk Square, a district in Philadelphia, is popular for its shopping district in the East Passyunk Corridor. There various independently owned shops that attract many customers and provide local shopping for Passyunk's diverse residents. Some specialty restaurants that attract tourists to the area are Geno's Steaks and Pat's King of Steaks, both serving the dish that Philadelphia is known for, the Philly Cheese Steak.
Passyunk offers some of the best Philadelphia real estate with properties primarily constructed in the 1800s. Larger brownstones and trinities, many of which have been combined into single family homes, are the trademark of the area. Because Passyunk is an older neighborhood, the challenge for residents is modernizing the area while maintaining its historic value. In recent years, residents have met this challenge by collecting an extra property tax whose funds go into a community chest that can be used for the improvement of the area. These funds are distributed by the Passyunk Square Civic Association.
The community improvement association offers assistance to residents who wish to spearhead beautifications projects. Residents are also active in the Civic Association, a coalition of residents who are concerned about the development of the community and its ability to continually offer prime Philadelphia real estate for sale. In addition to securing funds, traditionally less than $500 per project, the Civic Association recruits volunteers for man power from the area. Many residents are active in the beautification projects, further cultivating community togetherness.
