These working-class neighborhoods are just outside the historic Philadelphia City Center on the banks of the Delaware River. In the 1800s, Kensington emerged as a prominent manufacturing district and industrial area. Textile mills, knitting factories and carpet weaving facilities cropped up throughout Kensington in the 1800s. The pharmaceutical giant McNeil Laboratories, who manufactures Motrin, Tylenol and many prescriptions medications, began their path to success by purchasing a local pharmacy and soda fountain in the late 1800s.

By the 1950s, the industrial boom subsided and Kensington was left with high unemployment rates and a dwindling population. However, the city was revitalized by artisan craftspeople and professionals who established small boutiques and studios in the shops and factories that remained from Kensington's hay day.
